What is an HSM?

HSM meaning is Hardware Security Module also referred to as Host Security Module. Attached to a host computer running payments software and responds to host commands to provide specific cryptographic and security functions.

Some functions provided by the Payment HSM

Card verification (CVV/CVV2, dCVV, CSC, CVC/CVC2/CVC3)

PIN generation and mailer printing (IBM 3264, Visa PVV, Diebold, Random)

Translate transactions between encryption schemes
